The 2009 Andy Fletcher Prize competition involved 9 excellent presentations. The standard was such that any one of the presentations would have competed strongly for the prize on other years. Three presentations stood out however and the judges decided to split the prize to provide one winner and two 'runners up'. Congratulations to Ciara Donohue, Mike Irvine and Peter Frank.
Winner: Ciara Donohue (Luton & Dunstable Hospital) Improving the management of sepsis in the district general hospital.
Ciara presented a complete audit cycle around the improvement of the Sepsis Six program within the Accident & Emergency Department, that culminated in the successful implementation of a sepsis trolley with excellent compliance with the goals of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign protocols.
Runner Up: Mike Irvine (Queen Elizabeth Hospital) National survey of consultant in intensive care - implications for the future workforce.
Mike presented the work that he and colleagues had undertaken to review the speciality mix of doctors in training in critical care and the availability of jobs. He identified a significant mismatch in the numbers of trainees coming out with a medical/critical care dual CCST (32%) and the numbers of jobs available for them (18%).
Runner Up: Peter Frank (Queen Elizabeth Hospital) Elimination of endotracheal tube occlusion due to a change in humidification systems.
Peter presented data showing the incidence of endotracheal tube occlusion with HME filters and high performance active humidifiers. Although guidelines suggest that HMEs are associated with less frequent VAP the evidence presented challenged this particularly when heated wire circuits are used.
Other presentations:
Tamsin Poole (West Suffolk Hospital) - Perioperative cardiac arrest in a patient with previously undiagnosed Becker's Muscular Dystrophy after isoflurane anaesthesia for elective surgery.
Vikas Tripumeni (Queen Elizabeth Hospital) - Mild therapeutic hypothermia: experience in a district hospital in the UK.
Ganesh Ramalingam (Luton & Dunstable Hospital) - PRES - a case report.
Alex Doyle (Queen Elizabeth Hospital) - Use of the PneuX PY (LoTrach) in critical care.
Victoria Beckett (University of Cambridge) - An audit of nutritional support on NCCU.
Gokulnath Rajendran (James Paget Hospital) - Evaluation of procalcitonin at James Paget intensive care. |
